R&D

Our Design Department utilizes the most advanced tools available in the field today, including powerful 3-D CAD stations, as well as complex numerical codes for prediction of the fluid-dynamic behavior and the system optimization of internal combustion engines. These tools empower innovation and enable our staff to do rapid prototyping, thereby dramatically reducing the time-to-market!

Engine development is supported by our directly-managed, fully-equipped prototype shop and by state-of-the-art experimental labs these labs include a modal analysis test room, for on-line assessment and control of gas emissions on two-wheelers, as well as on engines for larger vehicles as part of our environment awareness, we also utilize a semi-anaechoic chamber, for control of noise emission and of all Noise Vibration and Harshness issues that are of prime interest also in the driver's comfort subject.

At Piaggio we have a total of 45 engine test benches that can be operated in parallel, giving us a tremendous R&D capability. Different families of engines are routinely developed simultaneously!

The "engine innovation" area of our Division is very active to anticipate customer needs, investigate new business opportunities, and to cope with future legislation. At present we participate in many R&D and industrial projects, including European Union-sponsored and S.A.E.-awarded efforts in the field of small engine direct injection (ULEV) and Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEV).
