Piaggio's low emission Advanced Engine Range

Scooters of the latest generation need to be equipped with engines that simultaneously fulfill the most demanding customer requirements, suit the broadest range of vehicle concepts, and are environmentally friendly. Keeping in mind this complex scenario, a new family of 4-stroke engines has been conceived, developed and tested by the PIAGGIO engineers: these are the LEADER engines PIAGGIO's Low Emission ADvanced Engine Range.
LEADER is a new family of 4-stroke Single Over Head Camshaft (SOHC) engines, comprising:
- 125cc, 150cc, 200cc, 250cc displacements
- 2- or 4-valve configurations
- air or liquid cooling
- drum or disk rear

Environment
All LEADER engines have expressly been designed to be environmentally friendly. In this sense, they all comply with the European Multidirective EC/97/24, with particular reference to:
- Exhaust Gas emission standards
- Noise emission standards
Design
The PIAGGIO LEADER engines are high-tech machines conceived for users of the 21st century. These engines are fully designed and optimized with 3-D CAD, which ultimately translates into better performance, with greater power, less fuel consumption and a power-to-weight ratio at the top levels in the market. As the acronym itself indicates, one of the specialties of these engines is their extremely low environmental impact, both from the point of view of gas emissions (all LEADER engines comply with the limits of the EC Multidirective 97/24, Chapter 5) and from the point of view of noise emissions (Chapter 9 of the Multidirective). This proves that the LEADER engines and the EC policy are on the same wavelength, aiming to a cleaner environment, a policy that in PIAGGIO, thanks to solid engineering principles, translates into ability to conjugate performances and care for the environment.
Key Features
- Broad customization options
- All SOHC engines
- High combustion efficiency
- High component commonality & high reliability and better quality/price ratio
- Architectural optimization & 20% less of parts, compared to a traditional 4-stroke engine for scooter
- High accessibility and ease of maintenance
Experiment
The excellent results on gas emissions and acoustics are tightly linked to the accurate structural and fluid-dynamics design, carried out on the 3-D CAD machines and validated with computer simulations and experimental labs, as well as to design solutions already adopted in large displacement engines, such as sliding bearings (instead of rolling bearings) on the crankshaft. The LEADER engines have been tested for thousands of kilometers on roads with dramatically different climatic conditions, from the Italian Alps to the Australian deserts!

Manufacture

The wide array of products encompassed by the LEADER family is handled through a manufacturing process that minimize off-line pre-assembly operations, with the benefit of streamlining of activities, and therefore the improvement of productivity and quality. The brand-new assembly lines of the 4-stroke LEADER engines have been expressly designed to achieve two fundamental goals: Excellence in quality standards and High optimization and automation of the assembly. Both these targets are set to deliver to the consumer a product with higher quality-to-price ratio, and have been pursued by means of state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques. A total of nine fully-automated zones are present along the assembly line. While these ensure high repeatability of the production process, in-process testing zones sustain the productivity targets, without compromising on the specified level of quality. This is what we call implementation of a truly third-millennium manufacturing process!

Customize
Thank to the innovative solution Patented by PIAGGIO of the final reduction group in the engine transmission, all LEADER engines allow wheels up to 14" diameter without changing the crankcase, which in turn allows high component commonality, hence high reliability and lower costs for the customer. In fact, LEADER represents a quantum leap in terms of design optimization, as it features an overall number of parts which is 20% smaller than for engines with similar application!
A very broad range of scooters can be powered by our engines: choose the LEADER configuration that best suits your needs and we will be pleased to start with you a business-to-business dialogue, putting at your disposal our long-lasting expertise in powertrains!
